Consultants from Executive Service Corps (ESC) presented to Rhode Island nonprofit leaders its report on their sector, the culmination of a landmark 22-month project. Titled "Toward Operational Excellence," its focus is twofold: (1) Where are agencies now on the road to operational excellence and (2) what do they need to progress further?

ESC gathered information, insights, and ideas from 190 agencies, 26 resource groups and 34 funding organizations; organized and analyzed the data; then played it back, through the report, to all participants and their peers.

Performance-related topics covered include agency's internal operating issues, external issues, major initiatives and priorities, resource use and unfulfilled needs. The report also provides over 150 ideas and suggestions from participants on "new directions" for the future for agencies, resources, funders and the sector as a whole.

The project was sponsored by The Rhode Island Foundation, United Way of Southeastern New England, and the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. The ESC consultant team was led by Charles T. Hutchinson, project director, and Keith Dennis, project designer/analyst, and included Barnet Fain, Edmund Marshall, William Kulik, and Harris Rosen.
